NORTHERN MARIANA ISLANDS WEEKLY UPDATE
Friday, July 4, 2008 07:57 MPT (Thursday, July 3, 2008 21:57 UTC)

ANATAHAN VOLCANO (CAVW#0804-20=)
16.35°N 145.67°E, Summit Elevation 2592 ft (790 m)
Volcano Alert Level: NORMAL
Aviation Color Code: GREEN

Report prepared by the U.S. Geological Survey.

USGS has received no reports of ash emissions, gas plumes, or other activity at Anatahan over the past week. USGS continues to monitor the volcano using seismic and satellite information.

It remains possible that some gas emission and steaming may occur intermittently and that during times of northerly winds, the Anatahan plume, if present, could be directed towards the CNMI and Guam. If this happens, residents may notice hazy air conditions and smell sulfur. The Emergency Management Office (EMO) of the CNMI government will issue volcanic haze and sulfur advisories if appropriate.

Access to the island may be restricted by the CNMI government. Contact the EMO to get the latest information.

Friday, June 13, 2008 07:54 MPT (Thursday, June 12, 2008 21:54 UTC)

ANATAHAN VOLCANO (CAVW#0804-20=)
16.35°N 145.67°E, Summit Elevation 2592 ft (790 m)
Volcano Alert Level: NORMAL
Aviation Color Code: GREEN

Report prepared by the U.S. Geological Survey.

Low level seismic activity characteristic of what is considered background seismicity continues at Anatahan. USGS has received no recent reports of ash emissions, gas plumes, or other activity over the past week. It is not known if the present quiet period represents merely a lull in the eruptive activity that began in 2003 or the cessation of eruptive activity and the end of the most recent eruptive cycle. USGS continues to monitor the volcano using seismic and satellite information.

NORTHERN MARIANA ISLANDS WEEKLY UPDATE
Friday, May 23, 2008 11:11 MPT (Friday, May 23, 2008 01:11 UTC)

ANATAHAN VOLCANO (CAVW#0804-20=)
16.35°N 145.67°E, Summit Elevation 2592 ft (790 m)
Volcano Alert Level: NORMAL
Aviation Color Code: GREEN

Report prepared by the U.S. Geological Survey.

On Tuesday May 20, the Aviation Color Code and Alert Level for Anatahan were lowered to Green and Normal based on continued low levels of seismic activity and no recent reports of ash or gas plumes. Whether this quiet represents merely a lull in the eruptive activity that began in 2003 or the cessation of this eruption is unknown. We continue to monitor the volcano.

Some gas emission and steaming may still occur. During more northerly winds, the Anatahan plume will be blown towards CNMI and Guam and may be experienced as a sulfur-scented haze. The Emergency Management Office (EMO) of the CNMI government will issue a volcanic haze and sulfur advisory when appropriate.

Access to the island may be restricted by the CNMI government. Contact the EMO to get the latest information.

NORTHERN MARIANA ISLANDS CURRENT STATUS REPORT
Wednesday, April 2, 2008 10:48 MPT (Wednesday, April 2, 2008 00:48 UTC)

ANATAHAN VOLCANO (CAVW#0804-20=)
16.35°N 145.67°E, Summit Elevation 2592 ft (790 m)
Volcano Alert Level: ADVISORY
Aviation Color Code: YELLOW

Report prepared by the U.S. Geological Survey.

Seismic activity has remained at a low level over the past 24 hours and there have been no reports or indications of ash or gas venting from the volcano. Eruptive activity appears to have ceased, although it is possible for unrest to resume with little warning.

Because volcanic activity has declined and there have been no reports of gas or ash emissions, USGS will cease its daily reporting of activity at Anatahan. USGS will continue to monitor the volcano closely and will resume daily status reporting if conditions change and require us to increase the alert level and color code. USGS will issue a weekly update, Friday of each week, that summarizes information about volcanic unrest obtained throughout the week.

Although volcanic activity has declined, access to the island may be restricted by the CNMI government. Please contact the Emergency Management Office for the latest information.
